Description
Black pepper grows on an evergreen vine native to India’s Malabar Coast. Black and white pepper are from the same plant — black pepper is made from the unripe berries of the pepper plant dried in the sun to make peppercorns. White Pepper is made from dried ripe berries with the outer husk removed.
Several of black pepper’s health benefits have been confirmed by modern research. The active component of pepper, called “piperine,” contains natural alkaloids that account for the plant’s medicinal use.
Recent studies associate black pepper, and its active ingredient piperine, with antioxidant activity as well immune system support. Some studies suggest that piperine may play a role in stimulating digestive enzymes and supporting healthy pancreas function.
